Kids ring size chart

Children’s rings are sold on the same US scale as adult ones, just at the bottom of it — sizes 0 to 5, from about 11.6 to 15.7 mm across the inside. Age tells you where to start looking and very little else: two eight-year-olds can be two sizes apart. Where a real measurement is possible, take one.

By age

Typical sizes by age — ranges, not answers

These are ranges because that is what the data supports. Every chart that gives a single size per age is presenting a midpoint as a fact.

Typical children’s ring sizes by age band, with inside diameter in millimetres. Individual variation inside a band is larger than the difference between bands.
AgeUS sizeØ mmWhat to watch
Baby, 0–12 months0 – 111.6 – 12.4Rarely worn, and a choking hazard if it comes off. Bangles are the safer gift.
Toddler, 1–3 years1 – 212.4 – 13.2Fingers are still growing fast enough to outgrow a ring within a year.
Child, 4–7 years2 – 313.2 – 14.1The first age where a fixed size is worth buying, and still a short-lived one.
Child, 8–11 years3 – 414.1 – 14.9Growth slows a little. Adjustable bands still buy you an extra year or two.
Teen, 12–15 years4 – 614.9 – 16.5The range widens sharply — measure rather than estimate from here on.
Teen, 16+ years5 – 815.7 – 18.1Adult sizing. Use the ordinary chart and measure the actual finger.

The part other charts skip

A child’s knuckle is proportionally bigger than an adult’s

On an adult hand the knuckle is a little wider than the base of the finger, and a well-sized ring passes it with a firm push. On a child’s hand the difference is larger: small fingers, joints that have not yet been outgrown by the soft tissue around them. A ring sized to the base of a child’s finger frequently will not go on at all.

So size to clear the knuckle and accept some slack at the base — the opposite of the advice for adults, where the two measurements are close enough to split the difference. If the gap between the two is more than about a size, an adjustable or open band is the right answer rather than a compromise size that fails at one end.

This is also why measuring a ring the child already wears beats measuring the finger. That ring has already passed the knuckle test in real life, which is the test that matters.Lay it on a calibrated screenand read the inside diameter.

The scale

Children’s ring sizes in millimetres

The same linear US scale as adult sizes, extended down to 0. Children’s rings are almost always quoted as US numbers or as a diameter, because the UK, Indian and Japanese scales do not extend cleanly this far down.

US ring sizes 0 to 5, derived from the ISO 8653 relationship: circumference = 36.537 + 2.5535 × size.

Before you buy

Three things worth deciding first

Growth beats sizing
A child’s finger can move a size in a year. Buy at most one size large, and prefer an adjustable band to a hopeful one — a ring that falls off is lost, not outgrown.
A loose ring is a hazard
For babies and toddlers a ring that comes off is a swallowing risk, which is why most jewellers steer under-fours towards a bangle or a pendant instead.
Check it comes off, too
Size so it can be removed when hands are warm after play, not only when they are cool and still. A ring that will not come off is the emergency the loose one is not.

Questions

Children’s ring sizing, answered

What ring size is a child?

Most children between 4 and 11 fall between US 2 and 4, which is an inside diameter of about 13 to 15 mm. The spread inside any age band is wide enough that the table above should narrow your search rather than end it.

What ring size fits an 8 year old?

Usually a US 3 to 4, about 14.1 to 14.9 mm inside diameter. Eight sits at the start of that band, so an eight-year-old can still be a US 2½, and an adjustable band covers the next year of growth.

What size ring for a 10 year old?

Usually a US 3 to 4, about 14 to 15 mm inside diameter, but the range across ten-year-olds is wide. Measure if you possibly can.

What ring size would a 12 year old be?

Usually a US 4 to 5, about 14.9 to 15.7 mm inside diameter. The 12 to 15 band runs from US 4 to 6 and twelve sits at its low end, but this is the age where children spread out fastest, so measure rather than guess.

What is the average ring size for a 14 year old girl?

Usually a US 4 to 6, about 14.9 to 16.5 mm inside diameter. By fourteen many girls are close to adult sizing, where the average woman is a US 6 to 6.5, so treat the adult average as the upper end of the likely range.

How do I measure a child’s ring size?

Measure a ring they already wear if there is one — that is the reliable method at any age. Otherwise wrap a strip of paper round the base of the finger, mark the overlap and measure to the mark, then check the knuckle passes at that size. A wriggling child makes a poor mandrel, so take the measurement twice.

Why does my child’s knuckle matter more than an adult’s?

A child’s knuckle is proportionally larger relative to the base of the finger than an adult’s. A ring sized to the base can be impossible to get on, and one sized to clear the knuckle can spin loose. Size to clear the knuckle, then accept that it will be a little loose at the base — or choose an adjustable band.

Should I buy a bigger size for a child to grow into?

No more than one size. A ring that is two sizes large falls off, and a lost ring is worse than an outgrown one. Adjustable or open-cuff styles are the honest solution to growth.

Is it safe for a young child to wear a ring?

A ring that can come off is a swallowing hazard for babies and toddlers, and a ring that cannot come off is a circulation risk if the finger swells. For under-fours, most jewellers suggest a bangle or a pendant instead.

Have a ring they already wear? That is the measurement.

Lay it on a calibrated screen and read the inside diameter — no wriggling child required.
