The average ring size for women is US 6 to 6.5 — an inside diameter of about 16.5 to 16.9 mm, or UK L to M. Useful as a starting point, and as a fallback for a surprise. It is still a guess, and half of all women sit outside it.

Four ways to find her ring size without asking

Borrow a ring she already wears
Take one from the correct hand and finger, measure the inside diameter on the calibrated sizer, and put it back. The most accurate method by a wide margin.

Press it into soap or lipstick
If you cannot keep the ring, press it into a bar of soap and measure the impression, or trace the inside edge on paper and measure across the circle.

Ask someone who can ask
A sibling or close friend can raise ring sizes in conversation without it landing as a hint. Cheaper than a resize and quieter than a tape measure.

Order at the average, plan to resize
If none of the above is possible, order US 6.5 and budget for a resize. Avoid tungsten, ceramic and full eternity settings — none of them can be resized.

What is the average ring size for a woman?
US 6 to 6.5, which is an inside diameter of about 16.5 to 16.9 mm and an inside circumference of about 51.9 to 53.1 mm. In UK sizing that is L to M, and in EU/ISO sizing 52 to 53.
What is the average engagement ring size?
The same, US 6 to 6.5 — engagement rings are worn on the same finger as any other ring, so there is no separate scale. Jewellers stock engagement settings most deeply at US 6, which is why that is the default size on most product pages.
Is the average ring size a safe guess for a surprise proposal?
It is a fallback, not a plan. Half the population sits outside US 6 to 6.5, and a ring one size out is either uncomfortable or unwearable. Borrow a ring she already wears on that finger and measure its inside diameter with the on-screen sizer, which takes about a minute and is far more likely to be right.
If I have to guess, should I guess large or small?
Large. A ring that is too big can be resized down or held with a sizing bead on the day, while one that does not pass the knuckle cannot be tried on at all. Going one size up is the safer error.
Does the ring finger differ from the other fingers?
Yes, and the difference is large. An index finger is usually about a full size bigger than the ring finger on the same hand, and the dominant hand runs roughly a quarter to a half size bigger than the other. Always size the exact finger the ring is for.
Does ring size change over time?
It does. Fingers change with weight, pregnancy, medication, arthritis and age, and they swell in heat and after exercise. Measure in the late afternoon at room temperature, and re-measure before buying if it has been a few years.
